When Capital FM launched with the line “Isn’t it good to know…Capital Radio” it revolutionised the UK radio industry. The station, which launched a week after LBC, became the UK’s second commercial radio station and a massive hit with music fans across London.
Since then Capital has gone through many changes whilst continuing to retain its position as a pioneer in promoting new music and talent.
Yesterday marked a new chapter for the station, which is now a national brand across the UK.
Capital’s transition from local station to national brand is the single biggest move in British commercial radio history and means that the newly tuned Capital FM has become the first commercial rival to BBC Radio 1.
The new Capital FM, which went live at 10am yesterday morning, to a weekly audience of 6.5million people, broadcasts the best music from the world’s biggest stars as well as the hottest showbiz and artist interviews, the biggest events, local news, traffic and travel.
The station, will broadcast from nine major centres across the UK including Scotland, North East, Yorkshire, Manchester, Birmingham, South Wales, South Coast and London, each with their own local produced breakfast and drive-time shows. Mid morning and evening content will be broadcast out of Capital’s London studio in Leicester Square, across the entire network, and presented by existing Capital FM DJ’s including Rich Clarke, The Bassman and Roberto.
Yesterday also saw the launch of a monster TV advertising campaign for the new station featuring and all star line-up of popular Capital FM stars including Rihanna, Usher, Black Eyed Peas and JLS.
