Capital Goes National

Sep 14, 2010

Capital will realise a lifetime ambition in early January 2011, when it completes a 37-year journey from local radio station to national brand.  From January, a number of Global Radio’s existing stations will re-launch as Capital, making it the first national commercial pop station in the UK and commercial radio’s first serious threat to BBC Radio 1.

Yes, there will more uniformity in terms of music and programming, but breakfast, drive and news will still be produced locally. And Global Radio is only rebranding parts of its existing portfolio – we’re not talking about brand new stations on brand new frequencies here.

If you are a Galaxy listener in Yorkshire, you wake up to a Yorkshire breakfast show from Simon Hirst and drive home to Adam O’Neill. On 3rd January, you will still wake up to Simon Hirst and Drive home to Adam O’Neill.

The exciting thing for listeners is they will have a new evening and mid-morning slot from London, giving the nation a common talking point.

Under the auspices of Group Chief Executive and founder Ashley Tabor, Global has a young, dynamic business in rude health and using its flagship Capital brand is the obvious choice.
We saw Global take the fight to BBC Radio2 when it rolled out the Heart radio station nationally two years ago to big success. And if any brand is equipped to take the fight to Radio 1, it’s Capital. It’s a huge brand that millions of people know and love.
